Video game nostalgia
Aug. 30th, 2012 01:14 pmI was bad yesterday and bought myself a copy of Diablo II plus the LoD expansion pack. It was in a bundle for $25, with the strategy guide, and since I seem to continually lose and break my previous install discs for the game, I figured getting a new copy would be good.
Now I remember why I used to spend ages playing this game. It may be a bit outdated, but people still do play it, and there's still online support for it in spite of the fact that Diablo III has been released. When people are still playing an online game that's over 10 years old, you know there's got to be something to it.
All my old accounts and characters are gone now, deleted into the ether, so I restarted a character I know I used to have. I can remember 4 of my old characters. A Fire Sorceress, who was fun to play in groups. A Paladin named Elberich, which is the one I restarted yesterday. An Amazon named Maerwyn Highweadow, who had a really kickass bow. And a Druid, who I called my Wolfbrother, because I always preferred the Werewolf shift to the Werebear. Most people liked the Werebear because of the boost to attack and defense, but I liked the ability to hit faster and more accurately, and my Wolfbrother was deadly when he was build up! I want to get these characters revived and able to be played once more.
I've also got plans for a Barbarian named Dekedrian, which is sort of an in-joke with a friend, whom I RP with sometimes.
It'll be a while before I get all these characters set up again. I started yesterday, and Elberich's only at level 14, and I'm not even through the first act of the game. But it's getting easier, and I'm remembering all the fun I used to have with this game. Playing it until 3 in the morning with friends, my WinAmp playlist coming through my headphones so that I didn't disturb my parents (I usually disturbed my father anyway, who would inevitably come in and complain that I was typing too loud and he couldn't sleep), losing all track of time in the pursuit of better equipment and higher levels.
Honestly, for the sheer number of hours I'm going to end up playing this game, even once I get Diablo III, this was a worthy $25. It's brought back so many happy nostalgic feelings that they alone could keep me playing, even if the game itself isn't as good as it is.
I do wish I knew more people who still played, though. It might be nice to do some multiplayer stuff, once my characters are stronger.
Ah well. Such is life, and semi-obsolete games. It's still fun on solo!
And now, back to letting Elberich save the world from the forces of evil!
